Abstract
Provides guidance for managing risks associated with storage and containment of flammable, combustible or hazardous materials in industrial and commercial buildings, updated to reflect changes in legislation and knowledge gained from incidents such as Buncefield. Key principles observed are inspection, maintenance, repair, extension or upgrading of existing systems. Classifies into 3 containment types, primary, secondary and tertiary and explores options, capacity, existing installations. Looks at design considerations for bunds including in situ reinforced concrete and masonry bunds, earth bunds and containment tanks. Examines transfer systems, looking at catchment areas, gravity and pumped systems and sacrificial areas and temporary containment.
