Abstract

Provides practical guidance for complying with building regulations on matters relating to materials and workmanship with examples and solutions for different building situations. Approved document B2 deals with fire safety in buildings other than dwellinghouses and covers: Sections B1 - Means of warning and escape, B2 - Internal fire spread (linings), B3 - Internal fire spread (structure), B4 - External fire spread and B5 - Access and facilities for the fire and rescue service. Approved Document B (fire safety) has been published in two volumes. Volume 1 deals with dwellinghouses and Volume 2 deals with all other types of building covered by the Building Regulations.

Supersedes BRAD 2010 B Fire safety - Volume 2 Buildings other than dwellinghouses (2006 edition incorporating 2007 and 2010 amendments) (for use in Wales) (DCLG, 2010). From 1 January 2016 the requirement for automatic fire suppression systems in residential buildings will apply to new and converted houses and flats. Since 30 April 2014 the requirements have applied to new and converted care homes, children's residential homes, boarding houses, halls of residence and hostels (not intended for temporary accommodation for leisure purposes). Main changes made by the 2016 amendments: This 2016 amendment to the Approved Document replaces the 2006 edition (incorporating the 2010 and 2013 amendments) and only applies to Wales. The 2016 amendments reflect changes due to the introduction of Regulation 37A (Fire suppression systems) into the Building Regulations 2010. Section 3 has been amended to reflect the requirement for automatic fire suppression systems in flats. A new-style format has been adopted for Wales.
