Abstract
Argues that more guidance is needed to determine what the term 'high environmental value' means with respect to brownfield or previously developed land. The National Planning Policy Framework states that this land should be prioritised for development as long as it is not of 'high environmental value' but there is little guidance on how this can be measured and as a consequence, many wildlife rich brownfield sites have been lost. Discusses the benefits of high environmental value brownfield land and provides examples of such sites, as well as the species to be found there.
