Abstract
Details requirements and relaxations for modifying existing motorways in England.

Parts of Section 5 and 6 superseded by CD 146 Positioning of signalling and advance direction signs (HE, 2019). Supersedes: HA IAN 149/11 Existing motorway minimum requirements (HA, 2011). Interim Advice Notes (IANs) are issued by the Highways England from time to time. They contain specific Guidance, which shall only be used in connection with works on motorways and trunk roads in England, subject to any specific implementation instructions contained within an IAN. Whilst IANs must be read in conjunction with the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCHW) for the above works, and may incorporate amendments or additions to documents in these manuals, they are not part of the DMRB or MCHW. To be used in conjunction with: TD 9/93 Highways link design, TD 22/06 Layout of grade separated junctions, TD 27/05 Cross-sections and headrooms, TD 46/05 Motorway signalling and IAN 44 Directional signs on motorway and all-purpose trunk roads - grade separated junctions.
