Abstract
While artificial lighting is an essential part of the modern built environment, when positioned incorrectly, placed where unnecessary and/or used in excessive amounts it creates a problem – to the point that light pollution is now considered a real threat to our health and our ecosystem. In this companion piece, we explore the different types of light pollution and some of the problems they are creating. Here, we look at urban area planning, designing practical lighting schemes and how to avoid contributing further to the problem.
