Abstract
In the 1990s, we saw a global uptake of programmes like BREEAM, LEEDS and the Green Building Councils (GCBs). The emphasis was on integrating all three sustainability pillars into our built environment, creating a ‘triple bottom line’ of social, environmental and economic sustainability. However, in the years since, the social element in these programmes has often been missing. In this article, we look how sustainability strategies neglect our poorest communities and how urban green spaces and infrastructure can have a positive impact on those communities, including helping to alleviate poverty.
