Abstract
This publication provides recommendations for structural engineers to reduce embodied carbon in steelwork designs. It emphasizes sustainable practices applicable to multi-storey buildings and other structural types, encouraging the adoption of efficient, environmentally conscious design methods. Key strategies include challenging conventional briefs by adapting or refurbishing instead of constructing new, optimizing material use, engaging with contractors early, and leveraging innovative solutions such as lightweight long spans and recovered steelwork. The guidance also stresses the importance of avoiding overdesign, providing precise information for fire protection, and prioritizing designs that reduce steel weight rather than relying solely on low-carbon materials like electric arc furnace steel.
