Abstract
Describes the transformation of Central Foundation Boys’ School, a top-performing London comprehensive, completed in 2023. The project, led by Hawkins\Brown, integrated seven historic buildings into a unified campus, overcoming financial and logistical challenges to upgrade 13,000m² of space. New facilities include science laboratories, a subterranean sports hall, and a repurposed Tabernacle Chapel for drama, art, and music. The scheme retained existing structures where possible, introducing infill buildings only where necessary. A green roof and landscaped areas enhance outdoor spaces, while targeted conservation efforts preserved heritage elements. Materials were carefully restored, reused, or matched, integrating brick, terrazzo, and metalwork to maintain the school’s historic character.
