Abstract
Describes Curzon Camden Cinema, part of the Hawley Wharf Camden Lock Village Development, occupying arches N7 to N14 of Railway Viaduct 4. Takero Shimazaki Architects transformed the speculative retail-ready arches into a cinema, retaining plywood linings, applying pigmented stains and fire-retardant lacquer, and using natural stone for durability and texture. Galvanised steel stairs and balustrades were designed with standard stock sections to minimise manufacturing. Existing curtain walling was retained, while external insulation and textured render created a monolithic contrast against the industrial brick. A consultative approach with Camden Council ensured tonal and material coherence with the site's industrial heritage.
