Abstract
Comprises standing advice for protected species. Provides advice for local authorities on assessing planning applications where there are freshwater or migratory fish on or near a proposed development site.

Last updated: 7 April 2025 - Updated the list of offences to match the relevant legislation in the section on how the species are protected and also added new wording about planning conditions, including the discharge of conditions and issuing of licences the 'Planning and licence conditions' section. Also clarifies the protections of European sturgeon (Acipenser sturio) and Atlantic sturgeon (Acipenser oxyrinchus) in the 'How fish are protected' section, while references to the following protected fish - burbot (Lota lota), allis shad (Alosa alosa), twaite shad (alosa fallax) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) are now included.
