Abstract

This SCI advisory note introduces Clause 10 of BS EN 1993-1-1:2022, which provides simplified fatigue design rules for steel structures under variable loading. Originating from the German DIN 18800-1 standard, the clause allows designers to determine whether a detailed fatigue assessment per EN 1993-1-9 is necessary. It outlines two conservative criteria based on stress range and expected stress cycles, offering thresholds that, if met, exempt the structure from further fatigue verification.
