Abstract
Summarises a sequenced approach for assessing safety factors in existing structures. Explores the use of standards, both historical and current and which versions to use, making adjustments to partial factors and the guiding principles. The 3 steps method focuses on: refining calculations (Step 1), reducing partial factors (Step 2), and acceptable levels of overutilisation (Step 3). Also covers: checking, errors, signs of distress, analysis, loadings, partial factor values, failure modes, applicability and uncertainty. Includes a worked example.
