Technical Note TN 130 Protection of reinforced concrete by surface treatments
Publication Year

Abstract
There is now considerable evidence to suggest that surface treatments to concrete can arrest or reduce deterioration due to corrosion of the reinforcement. The Technical Note first outlines the function and the protective and other properties required of a surface treatment, and discusses three methods of classifying the treatments available: by protective action; by the basic form of the material and its curing process; and by chemical composition. The main areas of research into the development of surface treatments are described, and the test methods used critically examined and compared. Application requirements are discussed in detail. Finally, criteria for performance and application specifications are suggested, and a number of recommendations are made for further long-term assessment of surface treatments on concrete.
