Report BR 104 Review of routine foundation design practice
Publication Year

Abstract
Summarises the findings of a recent study of the practice of foundation design. The factors governing the choice of foundations and their subsequent performance are cost, ease of construction and ground conditions. In many cases studied, foundations were selected at an early stage of the project, when little attention was paid to the ground conditions. Many of the foundation problems described during the survey could have been identified and avoided during the early stages of the project. Foundation failures and the costs of remedial works could be reduced by increased emphasis on desk study and site investigation work. Other factors which have an important influence on foundation design include project organisation, site supervision and Building Regulations. The most common causes of difficulty encountered by the designers and builders interviewed during the survey were buildings on fill, shrinkable clay sites and ground treatments such as vibro-replacement.
