Abstract
Describes research carried out by BRE into the viability of flushing WCs using a reduced volume of water. Suitable performance in use was a primary consideration and work was confined mostly to pans of the washdown type. Laboratory tests were used to identify existing 9-litre WCs that could operate effectively at lower flush volumes and from these were selected subjects for tests in use on site, using flush volumes down to 6 litres. Site performance of the WCs was found to be adequate regarding both clearance of the pan and flow in the drains. It was concluded that use of a 6-litre flush volume was feasible using WC pans substantially of the same design as some of the current 9-litre pans, providing that the less efficient siphons and cisterns were avoided.
