Abstract
Process integration (PI) is a method of analysing and optimising site energy use. The techniques are based on a method of assessing the potential for passive heat transfer between those specific parts of the site where energy is consumed in heating and those where energy must be released in cooling. The Building Research Establishment (BRE) has examined the potential for applying PI techniques to the provision of heating and cooling services in buildings, through involvement in trial projects associated with extensive hospital sites. These projects are used in the report to describe the analysis methods and to provide general conclusions concerning the use of PI for building services.
