Abstract
Between 1990 and 1992 the Building Research Establishment received an unusual number of reports of cladding deterioration in buildings clad and roofed with organically coated galvanised steel profiled sheet. BRE was interested in whether the spate of reports of deterioration of coated, profiled, metal sheeting simply reflected the increased use of this material or whether this type of material was showing a real reduction in performance. We designed a questionnaire to determine: i. whether sheeting was deteriorating prematurely, ii. what the most frequently used types of coating were, iii. whether corrosion was at cut-edges or in random spots, and iv. whether there were other problems, such as condensation. This report describes the findings of the survey and the implications for future research.
