Abstract
Describes the results of research into the solvent vapour concentrations generated during the painting of small surface areas, typical of interior trim. Under unventilated conditions, solvent vapour levels from conventionally formulated white spirit-borne paint exceeded the occupational exposure limit, but could be brought below the limit by a modest level of ventilation. Solvent vapour levels well below current guidelines were achieved when using paints formulated at low volatile organic compound (VOC) contents or paints in which white spirit was replaced by alternative solvents.
