Abstract
Automatic lighting controls, with suitable manual overrides, offer major opportunities for improving performance, occupant satisfaction and energy efficiency. This paper considers the purposes of lighting controls and how to match them to the needs of the occupants. It classifies space in terms of occupancy and perceived ownership. It provides guidance to designers, manufacturers, and occupiers on issues which need to be considered if the full benefits of lighting controls are to be realised.
