Abstract
The aim of this publication is to introduce practising engineers to the provisions of Eurocode 4 (EC4) and the UK National Application Document in so far as they relate to the design of steel-concrete composite columns. The terminology employed in Eurocodes is explained first, followed by the design philosophy of composite columns with encased I sections and concrete filled hollow sections. The objective is to assist designers to deal with practical problems encountered by them in their day-to-day work. It provides the first introduction to the methods of composite column design advocated in EC4 and conforms to the requirements of the UK National Application Document. The simplified method of designing composite columns to EC4 is explained in a step-by-step manner and a design example is provided to illustrate the procedure for an isolated non-sway column. Design Tables for composite columns with concrete encased I-sections and concrete filled hot finished hollow sections are also presented to assist designers in the scheme design stage. The Design Tables are prepared in accordance with the simplified design method of EC4 for isolated non-sway composite columns and conform to the requirements of the UK National Application Document; the cross-sections of the columns are doubly symmetrical and uniform along their lengths.
