Abstract
The report is being made available to obtain feedback on some issues raised and to inform and support the drafting of the International Standard. The draft standard utilises concepts included in a publication by the Architectural Institute of Japan (AIJ), in which a factorial approach to prediction of durability is adopted. This report assesses the feasibility of adopting such a methodology to this complex subject, and considers potential modifications to the Japanese approach to produce a model which maximises ease of use, simplicity and accuracy. The emphasis throughout the report is on producing a simple system which could be readily adopted in advance of substantial extensions to the data available to assist the prediction process. Some of the many factors which affect durability are examined, and an analysis is provided which indicates that certain issues are of general relevance, such as the inherent durability of the materials, the protective coatings applied, the treatment at perimeter conditions (boundaries) and the exposure to deteriorating agents.
