Abstract
Intended to remind and inform designers and site supervisory staff of ways of avoiding some of the most troublesome defects which have beset Local Authority housing. This Defect Action Sheet covers suspended timber floors: chipboard flooring - storage and installation. Failures discussed include chipboard sagging, buckling, loose or squeaking; loss of strength and stiffness due to wetting or high humidity. Defects discussed include flooring grade board not used; boards not stored under correct conditions; no perimeter gaps for expansion; nogging, nailing and gluing inadequate; moisture resistant board not used in potentially wet or humid areas.
