Abstract
Intended to remind and inform designers and site supervisory staff of ways of avoiding some of the most troublesome defects which have beset Local Authority housing. This Defect Action Sheet covers masonry walls: chasing. Failures discussed include cracking, reduced strength, instability; impaired sound insulation in separating walls. Defects discussed include chases greater than permitted depth, masonry broken away at chase intersections or where a vertical chase reaches to the bearing area at the top of a wall; chases and outlet boxes back-to-back on separating walls.
