Abstract
Intended to remind and inform designers and site supervisory staff of ways of avoiding some of the most troublesome defects which have beset Local Authority housing. This Defect Action Sheet covers external masonry cavity walls: wall ties - installation. Failures discussed include instability and rain penetration of external cavity walls. Defects discussed include insufficient ties to comply with Standards both generally and at openings; insufficient embedment; ties pushed into 'green' mortar; ties sloped the wrong way; drips not in the centre of the cavity; and mortar on ties.
