Publication Year

1990

Document Status

Current

Abstract

Intended to remind and inform designers and site supervisory staff of ways of avoiding some of the most troublesome defects which have beset Local Authority housing. This Defect Action Sheet covers slate clad roofs: fixing of slates and battens. Failures discussed include slates lifting or rattling in strong winds; battens split and underlay penetrated by slate nails; and water ingress to roof space. Defects discussed include slate or clout nails or clips, used to secure the slates to the battens, of incorrect size for the slate thickness and for prevention of uplift by wind action; and battens of incorrect size for slate fixings being used.
