Abstract

Practical guidance is offered on the Workplace health, safety and welfare regulations which came into effect on 1 January 1993. This approved code of practice (ACOP) contains relevant paragraphs along with guidance on the citation, interpretation, application and the requirements of the regulations. Subjects include the maintenance of equipment and systems; ventilation; temperature of the internal environment including the prevention of injurious fumes and use of thermometers; use of lighting (natural and emergency); waste materials and standards of cleanliness; the minimum dimensions of rooms, workstations and seating. Flooring and traffic routes are also considered. The subject of falls or falling objects is covered at length and includes fencing or covers, ladders, roofing, falling into dangerous substances, levels, stacking and racking, loading, unloading, use of scaffolds and gives guidance from other regulations. Guidance for escalators, walkways, windows, doors, gates is also provided. Final sections cover sanitary and washing facilities and drinking water.
