Abstract
The Handbook of hardwoods[1] (published in 1972) remains a principal reference providing fundamental information and data upon timbers available to the UK. However as the global timber market changes, it is inevitable that the availability or properties of timbers also change. This supplement aims to keep the Handbook up to date as it introduces 'new' species that were previously 'lesser known'. It also provides a summary of traditionally well known timbers that are now available as plantation grown material. The supplement is intended to be used alongside the existing Handbook as the terms of reference and methods of assessment are generally the same.
