Abstract
Produced jointly by the Netherlands and UK construction industries to provide practical guidance on the use of rock in coastal and shoreline engineering. It reflects British and Dutch national and international experience in applications where protection against the action of wind-generated waves is one of the dominant design considerations. The term 'rock' refers principally to irregularly shaped quarried rock materials, but includes other materials such as industrial by-products and naturally occurring shingle whose hydraulic performance under wave action is similar to that of quarried rock. The manual sets out an integrated approach to the planning and design process by considering a range of related parameters (e.g. availability and durability of materials; environmental implications; methods of construction; future management strategy; economic factors) as well as the basic engineering requirements. This enables optimum use to be made of locally available materials and helps to avoid design decisions being made which inadvertently constrain the evolution of the best overall solution to the problem.
