Abstract
Explains the causes of bulging in flank walls of Georgian and Victorian terraces, usually in loadbearing brickwork. Investigation of these failures, using electrolevels, illustrates both cyclical and long-term displacement, which varies according to variations in construction method. Case studies include a Georgian shop-fronted terrace in Chelsea, Victorian terrace in north London, Victorian shop-fronted terrace in Fulham, shop conversion of Georgian shops in Baker Street.
