Abstract

SMATEX is a thin surfacing system, developed in the UK and offered by Bardon Aggregates Ltd, that is based on stone mastic asphalt. As with all surfacing materials it has to gain approval by the Highways Agency and is assessed using the Highways Agency 5 stage procedure for evaluating new materials. SMATEX has been laid and monitored for up to three years at a number of sites and the results obtained from these sites are detailed and their implications reviewed in this report. SMATEX complies with the 5 stage procedure and has been granted type approval by the Highways Agency for use on trunk roads including motorways.
