Digest 449 Part 1 Cleaning exterior masonry: developing and implementing a strategy

Publication Year

2000

Document Status

Current

Abstract

The techniques and materials used in cleaning the exteriors of buildings present many problems and risks: to cleaning operatives, to the public and the environment and to the buildings themselves. This digest, in two parts, describes the hazards in cleaning operations that should concern building owners, landlords, project managers, specifiers, and building and cleaning contractors, and makes suggestions for good practice. It is relevant to all types of buildings, including private, public and historic buildings. The first part outlines the approach that should be taken to managing cleaning projects, the types of cleaning (broadly), choosing cleaning methods, specification and tendering criteria, research and trial cleaning, and analyses the cleaning of a building as a process. Part 2 categorises a range of widely used cleaning methods, highlights key issues, and describes the problems and risks associated with each method.
