Abstract
Although it has been proven in other industries, document management technology has yet to become established in the construction industry. This case study describes how a proprietary document management system, called an Issue Management System (IM) specifically designed for the construction industry, was introduced - at the client's request - during construction of the first building on a new business park. This medium-sized project proved a good test bed for the IM system, particularly since it allowed easy comparison with existing paper-based practices and procedures. The case study highlights the management issues that should be addressed to fully realise the long-term benefits of IM, particularly the need to introduce the system into a project team at the earliest possible stage. The value of such experience has become apparent as the technology has been employed in further phases of the same development.
