Abstract

Examines the history of thatching between 1790 and 1940. It is the culmination of four years of research which, for the first time, provides firm information about past techniques and materials. The work has revealed a much more complex picture than had previously been recognised. It shows that despite thatch apparently being a much replaced material, it survives in substantial quantities on roofs from the medieval period onwards. The research also shows that for most of England the tradition is of straw thatching.
