Abstract

The intention of this Part is to reduce the risk of accidents which could otherwise arise from built-in hazards or from the malfunction of mechanical equipment in and around a building. The requirements are intended to prevent the creation of dangerous obstructions, such as windows opening on to pedestrian routes at body height, and to prevent the construction and location of windows which cannot be cleaned and operated safely. They are intended to reduce injury caused by collision with glass and caused by unsafe access to and on roofs, to safely locate hot water and steam vent pipe outlets, and to reduce the risk of explosion through the malfunction of an unvented hot water storage system where a minimum range of safety devices is required and installation is controlled. Escalators and passenger conveyors are required to have safe stopping mechanisms which can be operated by the user in the event of an accident.
