Abstract
Concerned with the appearance and aesthetics of concrete bridges. Many of the observations are equally relevant to other structural materials but the plasticity and adaptability of concrete facilitate a wider range of design solutions, while posing challenges in maintaining long-term appearance. Because bridges are generally seen 'on the move' whether on foot or in a vehicle, the report considers aesthetics from a range of viewpoints. From a distance, the overall proportions and silhouette are discussed: from the medium view, the shape and integration of the bridge's piers, deck and abutments are considered: from close to, the focus turns to the surface finish, texture and weathering - all critical to the long-term appreciation of the structure. In conclusion reference is made to economy and to the special bridges designed to form a focal point for an area or location, so opening up a wider range of opportunities and challenges to the designer.
