Abstract
The concept of fire engineering requires an awareness of issues wider than those formerly considered in the context of 'fire protection'. These include: an understanding of the dynamics of fire; the analysis of fire hazards; the mitigation of fire damage by the proper design, construction, arrangement and use of buildings, materials, structures and systems; and the design, installation and maintenance of fire detection, alarm, suppression, and ventilation systems. This Guide seeks to address these issues and provide practical guidance for designers.
