Report BR 434 Modelling degradation processes affecting concrete

Abstract

Models for predicting time to failure for concrete are increasingly being used as tools for service life design and prediction. The corrosion of reinforcement, induced by carbonation or by chloride ingress, is perhaps the major durability problem affecting concrete structures in the UK. These two degradation processes are also the most suitable for service life modelling. This report considers current approaches to modelling degradation mechanisms that can affect concrete and how these can be used in service life design. Models based on BRE data have been developed for carbonation and chloride ingress and are compared with those given in the literature.
