Report 539 Assessment of traffic calming for trunk roads using the TRL driving simulator

Publication Year

2002

Document Status

Abstract

Describes a project in which the TRL driving simulator was used to examine the effectiveness of a range of signing and marking measures designed specifically for application on trunk roads. The work follows on from a pilot study previously undertaken for the Department for Transport, Local. Government and the Regions (DTLR). The objective was to evaluate new and existing traffic calming measures in different trunk road situations, comparing one measure with another. Combinations of measures used together were also investigated and the responses of drivers with different characteristics were examined. Commissioned by the Highways Agency’s Safety Standards and Research Directorate (Traffic, Safety and Environment Division).
