Abstract

Measurements were made of the lateral soil stresses produced by the compaction and swelling of Lias Clay backfill in a 2 metre high pilot scale facility comprising two retaining walls. Results confirmed that modified oedometer tests using a load cell to monitor net swelling pressure provided a reasonable upper bound for swelling pressure prediction.
