Abstract

EC Directive 97/11/EC amends EC Directive 85/337/EEC on the assessment of the effects of certain public and private projects on the environment. Together, the Directives require that certain types of project are subject to an assessment of their environmental effects before consent can be granted for the project to go ahead. This assessment process - 'Environmental Impact Assessment' or 'EIA' - is required if the project is likely to have a significant effect on the environment.
