Abstract

The concept of fire engineering requires an awareness of issues wider than those formerly considered in the context of 'fire protection'. These include: an understanding of the dynamics of fire; the analysis of fire hazards; the mitigation of fire damage by the proper design, construction, arrangement and use of buildings, materials, structures and systems; and the design, installation and maintenance of fire detection, alarm, suppression, and ventilation systems. This Guide seeks to address these issues and provide practical guidance for designers. The art of fire engineering has evolved and changed since the first edition of Guide E was published in 1997; computers are much more powerful, allowing greater use of analytical techniques such as computational fluid dynamics, and there are now a vast number of websites relating to fire engineering, which means much faster and wider dissemination of ideas. This Guide has been updated to take account of recent research and current legislation, and has made reference, where possible, to the latest publications and websites at the time of going to press. It has two completely new sections dealing with firefighting and fire safety management.
