Abstract
Study undertaken to examine the possible use of energy absorbing masts as passive safety devices to support road signs. The Standard for the Passive Safety of Road Side Equipment is EN 12767, which has three categories of energy absorbing devices. Non-energy absorbing devices are designed to breakaway, allowing a vehicle to pass with only a small change in impact speed. Low and High energy devices progressively absorb more energy than NE devices, with a corresponding increase in impact vehicle speed reduction.
