Abstract

Whilst radon may be a new issue for consideration during property transactions, it is not itself a new problem. Radon comes from traces of uranium that are present in all soils and rocks. Unfortunately in some areas of the country there is slightly more uranium in the ground. Because radon is a gas it can seep into buildings, and if allowed to build up can pose a health risk to occupants by increasing their long-term risk of developing lung cancer. This guide has been prepared to provide practical advice to anyone who is involved in property transactions in areas affected by radon. It explains in simple terms what radon is, the health risks, where to find it and how to measure it. It also describes practical methods for reducing the risk and gives a common sense approach to addressing radon during a property transaction.
