Abstract
Specifies methods for the manual ultrasonic testing of fusion welded joints in metallic materials equal to and above 8mm thick which exhibit low ultrasonic attenuation (especially that due to scatter). It is primarily intended for use on full penetration welded joints where both the welded and parent material are ferritic.

Supersedes BS 3923-1:1986. Amendment 10286 is Corrigendum No.1. Amendment 13990 replaces the word examination with the word testing throughout this document. Superseded by BS EN ISO 17640:2010.
