Report LPR 6 Halon alternatives: a report on the fire extinguishing performance characteristics of some gaseous alternatives to Halon 1301

Publication Year

1996

Document Status

Withdrawn

Abstract

Since the early 1990's, efforts have been made to find alternatives to the use of Halon 1301 as a gaseous agent in fire extinguishing systems. The need to find alternatives became necessary when it was discovered that Halon 1301 was one of the key chemicals that contributed to the depletion of the Earth's ozone layer. Although it has not been banned in the UK, it ceased production in 1994 and with recycling of existing stocks systems continue to function. There is a clear need to find alternatives to halon so fire protection requirements are being reappraised or redesigned or now use alternative technologies.

Loss Prevention Council

Formed from a merger of the Fire Offices Committee, the Fire Insurers Research and Testing Organisation and the Insurers Technical Bureau in 1984, the Loss Prevention Council (LPC) later went on to develop a certification body, the Loss Prevention Certification Board (LPCB), itself taken over by BRE Certification in April 2000. Other LPC documents are now available from the Fire Protection Association.
