Abstract
Gives details of a full-scale road experiment begun on N6 Athlone By-Pass in 1991 to compare the performance of open graded bitumen macadam, dense bitumen macadam, pervious macadam and rolled asphalt wearing courses under medium traffic. The composition, manufacture and laying of the surfacings are described in the report, together with the results of measurements and observations of the performance of the surfacings during the first four years of trafficking.

The National Roads Authority's (NRA) primary function, under the Roads Act 1993, was to secure the provision of a safe and efficient network of National roads. They were responsible for the planning and supervision of construction and maintenance, publishing the NRA DMRB and NRA MCDRW.
