Abstract

By 1996 Ireland’s population had risen to 3.63 million, with 58% living in urban areas. Demographic factors have led to a substantial increase in the available work-force and a reduced ratio of economic dependency, with benefits for the economy. Poverty levels have reduced, although some long-standing social problems remain. Consumption of goods and services has increased strongly. Surveys indicate that, compared to other EU citizens, Irish citizens make less effort to become informed and take fewer environmentally friendly actions, but show a greater willingness to pay somewhat more for certain environmentally friendly products and services.
