Abstract

Significant growth and change have occurred across the economic sectors. Agriculture, forestry and fisheries expanded significantly in the decade up to 1995. Approximately 9% of Ireland is now forested. Between 1990 and 1998 the number of vehicles increased by more than 50%, the country's total primary energy requirement increased by 35%, and the volume of industrial production more than doubled. Exports in 1998 were 73% of GDP, and tourist numbers have reached more than 1.5 times the resident population. Such rates of growth across the sectors pose a major challenge for preventing environmental damage.
