Abstract
Most of the main urban wastewater discharges to freshwaters are subject to secondary treatment. A major investment programme in sewerage capacity is currently underway, and all significant urban wastewater discharges will receive at least secondary treatment within a few years. By the end of 1998, most of the direct industrial discharges to estuaries and coastal waters were from industries subject to integrated pollution control (IPC) licensing, but non-IPC industries continued to make up the bulk of industrial discharges to rivers. Definite relationships between the intensification of agricultural activity and nutrient levels in rivers and lakes have been found, and it is clear that agriculture is a major source of nutrients entering Irish waters.
