Abstract
Changes on the land surface can arise from road building, industrial development, housing, agriculture, afforestation, quarrying and mineral exploitation. Increasing housing development and road building in recent years have put greater pressure on land resources. Overall consumption of aggregates (sand, gravel and crushed rock) in Ireland is now estimated to be approaching 50 million tonnes per annum. The extraction of minerals can have localised effects including air pollution, traffic generation, noise, and leachate from spoil heaps and tailings ponds.
